A Call for Better Support for Lung Cancer Patients

(SafetyAlerts) -  The new Global Lung Cancer Coalition pledges its support for this week's Europe Against Cancer campaign London - The new Global Lung Cancer Coalition today pledged its support for the 2001 Europe Against Cancer campaign which this year targets "Women and Tobacco". The main aims of this EU initiative is to motivate women who smoke to quit, and to encourage women - particularly in the 20-35 age range - to avoid passive smoking for themselves and their children.

Whilst nicotine addiction is strongly associated with lung cancer, it is by no means the only cause of this devastating disease: environmental, dietary and genetic factors have all been identified as increasing the risk. As a result of the links between smoking and cancer, the Lung Cancer Coalition believes that many people see lung cancer as a self-inflicted disease and feel less inclined to support its sufferers. In reality, these patients deserve and need the care and treatment options open to other cancer sufferers. This deadly disease can strike anyone.

"Prevention and smoking cessation campaigns such as the 2001 Europe Against Campaign, are a vital component of the fight against lung cancer. But the disease is simply not just going to go away. Survival rates in lung cancer are the worst among all major types of cancer - even with the best treatments currently available, and by no means do all patients have access to them, on average only 4 in 10 can expect to survive for more than a year." said Dr Mark Britton from the British Lung Foundation. "This is a situation we should not tolerate. We must see more investment into researching new treatments for lung cancer in the future and better access to the best available treatment" he continued.

The Global Lung Cancer Coalition aims to:
* Place lung cancer squarely on the global health agenda.

* Lessen the stigma of lung cancer among patients, their families, their health care providers, policy makers, and the general public.

* Empower lung cancer patients and their loved ones to take a more active role in their care.

* Effect change in relevant legislative and regulatory policies to optimise treatment and care of lung cancer patients

Dr Britton concluded "Lung cancer is a major international health problem. The Coalition is working together to promote better care, better services and greater understanding of the needs of lung cancer patients world-wide."
