Aventis Pharmaceuticals to Repeat Successful Breast Cancer Patient Outreach Program

'Connection Cards'(TM) to Be Offered During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Aventis Pharmaceuticals today announced it will once again offer "Connection Cards"(TM), an outreach program for breast cancer patients who are undergoing treatment. "Connection Cards" are designed to help patients develop a support network of institutions and professional experts. The program is available beginning today to coincide with the start of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 192,200 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be reported in women in the United States this year. Women undergoing treatment may obtain the Connection Cards from their oncologists.

The "Connection Cards" program includes 10 custom-designed, all-occasion note cards and envelopes, a matching 30-minute prepaid long-distance phone card, and a credit card-sized reference card containing toll-free numbers and Web site addresses for nationally recognized breast cancer organizations, including the American Cancer Society, Living Beyond Breast Cancer, the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations (NABCO), the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC), the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization. The reference card also provides a toll-free phone number and Internet address for "Living With It," Aventis' new comprehensive support program for women with recurrent breast cancer. With the completion of this year's program, nearly 100,000 Connection Cards kits will be distributed to patients.

"After a breast cancer diagnosis, every woman needs state-of-the-art care, information to help her make the best decisions, connection to practical and expert resources, and the support and comfort of family and friends," said Amy S. Langer, executive director of the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations (NABCO) and a breast cancer survivor. "This program will offer patients a welcome and meaningful gift."

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, excluding skin cancer, and the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2001 there will be about 40,600 deaths from breast cancer in the United States.
