Sophie’s Choice Meats Cooked Smokies Recalled

Cleveland, OH (SafetyAlerts) - Sophie’s Choice Meats is voluntarily recalling approximately 130 pounds of cooked smokies because they may be contaminated with Listeria Monocytogenes bacteria, according to the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

The product subject to recall is "Sophie’s Choice Meats Smokies", identified by manufacture date 10/13/99. Store locations where sold include the Parma area; approximate date sold to consumers includes 10/14/99 through 10/23/99.

The action is precautionary and there is no evidence that the product is associated with any human illness.

Consuming products that contain Listeria bacteria can cause Listeriosis, a disease which usually causes mild flu-like symptoms in healthy individuals.  However, Listeriosis could be life threatening to individuals with weakened immune systems, the elderly and may result in still-births in pregnant women.

Because of the potential of foodborne illness, Sophie’s Choice Meats urges their customers who have purchased the suspect products not to eat them and return them to the company. Contact person: Chris Zebrowski, Sophie’s Choice Meats, 216/281-7282.

Customers may bring those designated packages to 4201 Detroit Avenue or call 216-840-0111.
