Food Lion Recalls Contaminated Ground Beef in North Carolina

Cary, NC (SafetyAlerts) - The Food Lion located at 973 N. Harrison St. in Cary, NC is recalling some of its ground beef because the product may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

Routine sampling conducted by the USDA, Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), as part of the FSIS microbiological monitoring program spotted the contaminated ground beef.

The Food Lion ground beef being recalled has "Sell by" Aug 19 on the label.  Customers who may have purchased this product should check their freezers and are urged not to eat the beef but to return it to the store.

Escherichia coli O157:H7 is an emerging cause of foodborne illness. An estimated 10,000 to 20,000 cases of infection occur in the United States each year. Infection often leads to bloody diarrhea, and occasionally to kidney failure.
