Certain Ruth's Spreads for Listeria
Charlotte, NC (SafetyAlerts) - B&H Foods, Inc. of
, NC is voluntarily recalling Ruth's Pimento Spread, Lite Pimento Spread, Old Fashion
Pimento Spread, Pimento Cheddar Spread, Hot Pimento Spread, Pimento Spread with Pickle,
Deviled Egg Spread, and Cream Cheese with Pineapple and Pecan because of potential
contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
All "SELL BY" dates between
March 17, 2000 and June 7, 2000 are being recalled. These products come in 7 oz., 12
oz., 16 oz., and 24 oz. clear plastic containers with the SELL BY date on the bottom of
the container. Institutional sizes of these products come in 5 lb., 10 lb., and 40
lb. white plastic containers with the "SELL BY" date stamped on the top of the
The sandwich spreads were distributed
in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee, through retail grocery stores
and institutional establishments in these areas.
An FDA investigation revealed that the finished
product contained the bacteria. The company has ceased operations at its Chester, SC
plant and has transferred production to another plant while FDA and the company continue
their investigation as to what caused the contamination.
Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria
monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy
people rarely contract listeriosis. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache,
neck stiffness, and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as
well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weak immune systems such as
infants, the frail or elderly, and persons with chronic disease, with HIV infection, or
