400 pounds of "Honest John's Hot Dogs Recalled for Listeria

Utica, NY (SafetyAlerts) - Smith Packing Co., Inc. is voluntarily recalling more than 400 pounds of hot dogs that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The products subject to recall are "HONEST JOHN’S" brand hot dogs packaged for sale in individual 16 ounce packages and 12 pound boxes.

The 16 ounce packages bear "EST. 4578" inside the USDA seal of inspection and the sell by date "Apr 11" on the label.

On the outside of the 12 pound boxes, which contain two 6 pound packages, is the sell by date "Apr 11" and the plant number "EST. 4578" inside the USDA seal of inspection.

In addition, any 6 pound packages -- which have no identifying marks -- that have been removed from any 12 pound box of Honest John’s hot dogs, should be returned to the company.

The hot dogs involved in this Class I recall were distributed in Oneida County, N.Y.

"Because of the potential for foodborne illness, we want consumers to be aware of the recall," said Margaret O’K. Glavin, FSIS associate administrator.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weak immune systems--infants, the frail or elderly, and persons with chronic disease, with HIV infection, or taking chemotherapy.

FSIS has received no reports of illness associated with consumption of this product. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a physician.

Consumers with questions about the recall may contact Mark Smith, vice president, Smith Packing Co., tel. (315) 732-5125.
