Feller’s Precooked Meats Inc. Recalls Roast Beef and Pastrami for Hotels, Restaurants and Institutions

North Salt Lake, UT (SafetyAlerts) - Feller’s Precooked Meats Inc. is voluntarily recalling approximately 9,500 pounds of cooked roast beef and pastrami that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.  This is a Class I recall.

The products subject to recall are 6 to 8 pound random weight packages of "FELLER’S" brand roast beef and "FELLER’S" brand pastrami. The roast beef packages have a sell by date of May 27 or May 28, with case codes 20102, 2980, 2954, or 2054. The pastrami packages have a sell by date of May 27, with case codes 4966 and 2466. The package labels and case labels also bear "EST. 1550" inside the USDA seal of inspection.

The roast beef and pastrami were packaged March 30 and distributed to hotels, restaurants, and institutions in Utah, Washington, and Oregon.

FSIS has received no reports of illness associated with consumption of this product. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a physician.

"Because of the potential for foodborne illness, we want consumers to be aware of the recall," said Margaret O’K. Glavin, FSIS acting administrator.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weak immune systems--infants, the frail or elderly, and persons with chronic disease, with HIV infection, or taking chemotherapy.

Consumers and media with questions about the recall may contact Kelly Feller, president, Feller’s Precooked Meats, Inc., at (801) 292-0404, ext. 125.
