GM Has Recalled the 1997 BLAZER, JIMMY, BRAVADA

(SafetyAlerts) - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released the following information.

Make : CHEVROLET Model : BLAZER Year : 1997

Make : GMC Model : JIMMY Year : 1997

Make : OLDSMOBILE Model : BRAVADA Year : 1997

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 03V117000

Component: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY

Potential Number Of Units Affected : 312715

Summary:
CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES WERE BUILT WITH A DRIVERS SEAT BELT BUCKLE ASSEMBLY THAT CONTAINS AN ENERGY-ABSORBING LOOP. SUSTAINED LOADS OF SUFFICIENT MAGNITUDE AND DURATION ON THE BELT IN SEVERE CRASHES COULD FULLY DEPLOY THE BUCKLE ENERGY-ABSORBING LOOP, INTRODUCING A TOTAL OF 10 ADDITIONAL INCHES OF WEBBING INTO THE SEAT BELT SYSTEM. THE FREE FALLING LATCH PLATE USED IN THIS SYSTEM MAY ALLOW WEBBING TO DYNAMICALLY DISTRIBUTE BETWEEN THE LAP AND SHOULDER BELT AS THE DRIVERS POSITION CHANGES DURING A MULTIPLE ROLLOVER EVENT.

Consequence:
IF THE ENERGY-ABSORBING LOOP FULLY DEPLOYS IN A SEVERE MULTIPLE ROLLOVER CRASH, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT A BELTED DRIVER MAY EXPERIENCE PARTIAL OR EVEN COMPLETE EJECTION FROM THE VEHICLE.

Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ENERGY-ABSORBING SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020, GMC AT 1-800-462-8782, OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-6537.

Important Note Regarding Auto Recalls
Frequently SafetyAlerts will list auto recalls before
your dealer will know about them. If you have a vehicle
affected by one of these posted recalls be sure and
write down the NHTSA
CAMPAIGN ID Number.
If your dealer doesn't know about the recall when you
check, ask them how they are notified of recalls and
when the next update is due.
