FDA Expands Salmonella Warning for Sun Orchard Non-Pasteurized Orange Juice to Include "Vareva" Brand Frozen Juice

Tempe, AZ (SafetyAlerts) - The Food and Drug Administration has released additional warnings to consumers urging them to check there freezers for Sun Orchard's Vareva brand frozen orange juice because the product has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella muenchen.

The unpasteurized juice was sold under the brand name Vareva especially to restaurants, food services and other institution. Therefore the agency recommends that consumers check their freezers for the recalled product and inquire about the source of any unpasteurized orange juice they may be served at a restaurant or other dining facility.

Although the company has already issued a warning and undertaken a recall of the affected product, FDA is taking this action because of continuing reports of illness related to this product.  To date dozens of illnesses have been reported throughout the United States and Canada.

Back in June, Sun Orchard initiated a recall of their non-pasteurized orange juice due to reports of consumers becoming ill after drinking the Juice. The recall included Sun Orchard, Earls and Joey Tomatoís, Viola, Trader Joeís, Aloha, Zupan, Markon, and Sysco. brand names with an "enjoy by" date of July 7, 1999 or earlier.

Salmonella muenchen is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail, and elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Salmonella muenchen is a bacterial disease with an incubation period that is usually about one to three days. It can cause abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Dehydration may be severe, especially among infants or in the elderly, and fever is common. The condition often persists for several days.

An earlier press release issued by the company stated, Marc Isaacs, president, Sun Orchard Inc. stated, "Sun Orchard strives to produce the safest and highest quality products possible. We deeply regret any illnesses that may have been caused by people drinking non-pasteurized orange juice from our company. We will do everything we can to prevent any situations like this from recurring, "

Sun Orchard has stopped production of unpasteurized orange juice and is currently pasteurizing all of its juice products.

Consumers who may have any of these products in their homes should destroy them or bring it back to the place where it was purchased.

Consumers who have purchased unpasteurized orange juice labeled with any of the above listed trade names are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 206-780- 8042 or 212-213-7012.
