Hanes Baby Recalls Three Baby Items with Puffed Decals

Winston-Salem, NC (SafetyAlerts) - Sara Lee Underwear said today it is recalling three items in its Hanes Baby line because of a decorative puffed decal that has the potential to flake after washings. The items being recalled include two styles of a union suit, a receiving blanket and two styles of a terry-cloth hooded towel. The company has had no consumer reports of any kind of injury from the decals, but is voluntarily recalling the items as a purely precautionary measure.

Sara Lee Underwear has notified the Consumer Product Safety Commission that the company is voluntarily recalling the items because of the company's concern that it may be possible that particles from the decal could cause discomfort or choking if swallowed or inhaled by an infant.

The union suits -- a one-piece, long-sleeved, long-legged knit garment with snaps down the front -- come in two designs: one with a giraffe decal on the left chest in yellow, pink or blue striped fabric, and the other with a cow decal on the left chest in yellow, blue, or pink checked fabric. The receiving blanket comes in blue, yellow or pink striped cotton-knit fabric with a zebra decal on the corner. Hooded towels are available in either a safari-print terry cloth with an elephant and birdbath decal on the hood or in a yellow-trimmed white terry cloth with a pig and chicken decal on the hood. Product numbers for the styles being recalled are HBUSS, HBMUSS, HBRBS, IRBWRB, HBTWP, HBMTWP, IRBWTW and IRBWUS.

The company is offering either a refund of the purchase price or coupons for other Hanes Baby apparel for return of these items. Consumers with any of these products should call toll-free 1-800-959-6523 to receive a postage-paid label to return their product and obtain recall instructions. Union suits, blankets and hooded towels had been available at several major retailers since early spring 2000. Stores have been notified and asked to remove product from their shelves.

Sara Lee Underwear, headquartered in Winston-Salem, N.C., is a leading manufacturer and marketer of underwear for men, women and children under the Hanes and Hanes Her Way brand names.
