Co., Inc. a manufacturer of natural pet treats, has announced that it is
voluntarily recalling 100 count cases of Smoked Pig Ears, shipped during the months of May
- July 2000, due to possible Salmonella contamination.
Carolina Prime Pets, located in
Murphy, NC, distributed the pig ears to BrittmoreTexas Company who in turn distributed the
pig ears to retail stores in the following 8 states: AZ, CA, MD, NJ, OK, PA, TX, VA.
Pet owners can become ill by touching
their mouth or food without washing their hands after handling the pet treats. Salmonella
is an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in small children,
frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people may only
suffer short-term symptoms, such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea,
abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Long-term complications can include arthritis. Salmonella is
not considered a health risk for pets.
The Food and Drug Administration found Salmonella contamination in samples of the product.
The 100 count cases of pig ears were shipped sealed in Fres-Pak bags inside cartons. These
pig ears were shipped to the following pet stores and sold to the public as single,
