Ford Motor Company
Models: Ford E350/Econoline Truck Year: 1999
Number Involved: 350
Dates of Manufacture: August 1998
Defect: These pickup trucks, equipped with single rear wheels and a
3.55:1 or 3.73:1 axle ratio, were built with incorrect speedometer driven gears, resulting
in a lower speedometer reading than the actual vehicle speed being driven. This can result
in the vehicle being driven at an unsafe or illegal speed should the driver not realize
that his vehicle road speed is greater than what the speedometer indicates.
Remedy: Dealers will install the correct speedometer gear. Owner
notification began November 2, 1998. Owners who do not receive the free remedy within a
reasonable time should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.
[NHTSA Recall No. 98V257/Ford Recall No. 98S28]
NHTSA said manufacturers are required to mail a recall notice to all purchasers, owners
and dealers when a safety defect or noncompliance with Federal safety standards is found.
The agency urges owners to wait until they receive notification from the manufacturer
before contacting their dealers to schedule the repair work. Not all vehicles of a
particular make and model may be subject to the recall.
