Number Involved: 11,200
Dates of Manufacture: January - April 1998
NHTSA Recall No.: 98V101
Description of Defect: The parking brake system on these super duty single rear wheel
trucks, when engaged with a force of 125 pounds applied to the park brake foot control,
may not hold the vehicles on a 20-degree slope. This does not comply with the requirements
of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 105, "Hydraulic Brake
Systems." This could allow a vehicle to roll on an incline, increasing the risk of a
vehicle crash, personal injury, or property damage.
Remedy: Dealers will burnish the parking brake using a specified procedure.
Owner Notification: Owner notification is expected to begin June 1, 1998. Owners who do
not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Ford at
NHTSA said manufacturers are required to mail a recall notice to all purchasers, owners
and dealers when a safety defect or noncompliance with Federal safety standards is found.
The agency urges owners to wait until they receive notification from the manufacturer
before contacting their dealers to schedule the repair work. Not all vehicles of a
particular make and model may be subject to the recall.
