American Racing Wheels
American Racing Model 500
Number Involved: 2,397
Dates of Manufacture:
NHTSA Recall No.: 98E016
Description of Defect: 500/501 Series, 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels (500 Series
designed for front-wheel drive vehicles and 501 Series for rear-wheel drive). The center
of the wheel can fracture and separate from the rim. If the wheel separates, a loss of
vehicle control can occur, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Remedy: Dealers will either replace these wheels, including all costs associated
with vehicle towing and installation, labor, mounting, and balancing of the replacement
wheels and provide a full refund for the wheels including any associated costs; or replace
these wheels with applicable original equipment manufacturer's (OEM) wheels, including all
costs associated with the vehicle towing, purchase, installation, labor, mounting, and
balancing of the OEM wheels.
Owner Notification: Owner notification began March 30, 1998. Owners who do not
receive a free replacement wheel within a reasonable time should contact American Racing
NHTSA said manufacturers are required to mail a recall notice to all purchasers, owners
and dealers when a safety defect or noncompliance with Federal safety standards is found.
The agency urges owners to wait until they receive notification from the manufacturer
before contacting their dealers to schedule the repair work. Not all vehicles of a
particular make and model may be subject to the recall.
