Ford Motor Company
Number Involved: N/A
Dates of Manufacture:N/A
NHTSA Recall No.: 98B22
Description of Defect:This is not a safety defect in accordance with the Safety
Act. However, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. On these minivans
sold during the months of December 1996, and January, February and May 1997, one or both
of the two bolts that hold the front brake caliper anchor plate to the wheel spindle can
loosen and fall out. If the upper bolt falls out, the caliper can pivot outward contacting
the inside of the wheel rim resulting in wheel lockup.
Remedy: Dealers will tighten the bolts on the front brake caliper anchor plate to
the hub and spindle assembly.
Owner Notification: Owners can contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.
NHTSA said manufacturers are required to mail a recall notice to all purchasers, owners
and dealers when a safety defect or noncompliance with Federal safety standards is found.
The agency urges owners to wait until they receive notification from the manufacturer
before contacting their dealers to schedule the repair work. Not all vehicles of a
particular make and model may be subject to the recall.
