Volkswagen of America, Inc.

VW Jetta Years: 1993-1995
VW Golf Years: 1993-1995
VW GTI Years: 1993-1995

Number Involved: 153,000
Dates of Manufacture: February 1992 - June 1995
NHTSA Recall No.: 98V195
Vehicle Description:
Description of Defect: The rear brake line on the passenger side was routed too close to the corner of the fuel tank. The line could be damaged by chafing against the fuel tank. Repeated chafing could eventually result in a leaking brake line causing diminished braking in one brake circuit, increasing the vehicle's stopping distance.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect the routing of the right rear brake line, correct the routing if necessary, and replace any damaged lines.
Owner Notification: Owner notification was expected to begin during September 1998. Owners who do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact VW at 1-800-822-8987.

NHTSA said manufacturers are required to mail a recall notice to all purchasers, owners and dealers when a safety defect or noncompliance with Federal safety standards is found. The agency urges owners to wait until they receive notification from the manufacturer before contacting their dealers to schedule the repair work. Not all vehicles of a particular make and model may be subject to the recall.
