August 31, 1999Volkswagen and Audi Recall Some 1998
"A" Model and Passats for Front Axles Problems
FRANKFURT (SafetyAlerts) - In two separate statements issued today,
both Volkswagen and Audi are announcing the recall of over 400,000 automobiles worldwide
because of problems with the front axle. 160,000 of the recalled vehicles were sold in
Germany. The rest of the cars were sold in other countries including the United States.
The exact number of vehicles in the U.S. is unknown at this time.
The recall affects certain 1998 Audi A4, A6 and A8
models as well as certain Volkswagen Passats. According to the companies, the track
rod end of the front axle can leak causing premature wear.
Both Audi and VW said they would begin owner
notification shortly and owners of the affected automobiles should expect a letter asking
them to bring their cars in for repair. There will be no charge for the repair work.
