September 10, 1999
Mazda North America, Inc.
Models: Mazda MVP Minivans
Number Involved: 12,000
Dates of Manufacture: March -
Defect: Because of the
inappropriate shape of the linkage in the rear door lock controller, accumulated dust may
prevent the door lock mechanism from functioning properly, causing incomplete locking of
the door when the childproof locking system is used. This could result in an opening of
the door while driving.
Remedy: Dealers will install
parts in the latching assembly that will prevent this problem from occurring. Owner
notification began during July 1999. Owners who do not receive the free remedy within a
reasonable time should contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500.
