March 9, 2000Ford Extends Warranty on
Head Gaskets for 1994-1995 Taurus and Sable, 1994 Continental, and 1995 Windstar
Dearborn, MI (SafetyAlerts) - Ford Motor Company has
announced a warranty extension for head gaskets on the 1994 Lincoln Continental, 1995 Ford
Windstar, and the 1994-1995 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable automobiles equipped with the
front-wheel drive 3.8 liter engine.
The new warranty extension will cover
repairs to the head gaskets on these vehicles for up to 7 years, or 100,000 miles, which
ever occurs first.
This is the second extension of this
warranty issued by Ford. "As these vehicles aged, we have received new data that
indicates some owners are having failures outside the original warranty extension."
Ann O'Neil, director, vehicle service and programs for Ford said. "We have
looked at the data, listened to the voice of our customers and are taking this action
because customer satisfaction is our number one priority."
Owners who experience a head gasket
failure will receive free repair work or, if necessary, a replacement engine.
In the event of a catastrophic
failure of the engine, if no replacement engines can be obtained within a reasonable time
(5 days or so), Ford will offer to buy back the vehicles for the NADA average wholesale
price plus $3,000 towards a new vehicle.
Owners who have already experienced
head gasket failures during the 7 year/100,000 mile time frame will be eligible for a full
refund for past repairs, or for a limited time, may choose a $4,000 certificate to be used
towards the purchase of lease of a new Ford, Lincoln or mercury vehicle.
Questions regarding this action
should be directed to Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673.
