Ground Beef for Restaurants recalled for Possible E. coli 0157: H7

WASHINGTON, DC  (SafetyAlerts) - The Food Safety Inspection Service announced today the recall of almost three thousand pounds of Ground beef packaged in 5 pound containers. The product, distributed for institutional use only (restaurants), may be contaminated with E. coli O157: H7.

All recalled product was distributed in the Grand Rapids, Michigan, area and was produced on July 12, 1999. The packages and boxes bear Establishment number 10273 in the inspection legend. The fresh ground beef was marked with the date of production (box date 07-12-99) and code # 071299 on the boxes.

The contamination was sound when a sample of ground beef, collected as part of FSIS routine verification activities, was submitted to an FSIS laboratory for analysis of possible E. coli 0157:H7. The laboratory results were reported as positive on July19, 1999.

The Manufacturer, G & T Meat Company Inc. of Grand Rapids, MI has contacted their consignees by telephone and in writing to inform them of the recall.
