Sun Orchard Expands Recall of Non-Pasteurized Orange Juice

Original Recall Release
Update To Include Frozen Juice

Tempe, AZ (SafetyAlerts) - Sun Orchard Inc. of Tempe, Arizona has now recalled all non-pasteurized orange juice supplied by the company because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella muenchen.

The Sun Orchard non-pasteurized orange juice was distributed in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington State, Wisconsin, and Alberta and British Columbia in Canada through institutional channels, retail stores and restaurants.

The non-pasteurized orange juice is packaged in clear plastic gallons, half-gallons, quarts, pints, 12 ounce, and half-pint containers stating "enjoy by" (or "pull by") July 7, 1999 or earlier and bearing the following labels: Sun Orchard, Trader Joe’s (gallon size only), Aloha, Zupan, and Voila.

Consumers who may have any of these products in their homes should destroy them or bring it back to the place where it was purchased.

The recall was the result of Salmonella muenchen reported by Washington State epidemiologists. Epidemiological techniques have indicated that the non-pasteurized orange juice was the likely source of 14 illnesses in Washington State and four illnesses in Oregon.

Salmonella muenchen is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail, and elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Salmonella muenchen is a bacterial disease with an incubation period that is usually about one to three days. It can cause abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Dehydration may be severe, especially among infants or in the elderly, and fever is common. The condition often persists for several days.

"Sun Orchard strives to produce the safest and highest quality products possible. We deeply regret any illnesses that may have been caused by people drinking non-pasteurized orange juice from our company. We will do everything we can to prevent any situations like this from recurring, " said Marc Isaacs, president, Sun Orchard Inc.
