Sun Orchard Expands Recall of Non-Pasteurized

Update To Include Frozen Juice
Tempe, AZ (SafetyAlerts) - Sun Orchard Inc. of
Tempe, Arizona has now recalled all non-pasteurized orange juice supplied by the company
because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella muenchen.
The Sun Orchard non-pasteurized orange juice was
distributed in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah,
Washington State, Wisconsin, and Alberta and British Columbia in Canada through
institutional channels, retail stores and restaurants.
The non-pasteurized orange juice is packaged in
clear plastic gallons, half-gallons, quarts, pints, 12 ounce, and half-pint containers
stating "enjoy by" (or "pull by") July 7, 1999 or earlier and bearing
the following labels: Sun Orchard, Trader Joes (gallon size only), Aloha, Zupan, and
Consumers who may have any of these products in
their homes should destroy them or bring it back to the place where it was purchased.
The recall was the result of Salmonella muenchen
reported by Washington State epidemiologists. Epidemiological techniques have indicated
that the non-pasteurized orange juice was the likely source of 14 illnesses in Washington
State and four illnesses in Oregon.
Salmonella muenchen is an organism which can cause
serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail, and elderly people, and
others with weakened immune systems. Salmonella muenchen is a bacterial disease with an
incubation period that is usually about one to three days. It can cause abdominal pain,
severe diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Dehydration may be severe, especially among
infants or in the elderly, and fever is common. The condition often persists for several
