Schratter Foods Inc. Recalls   Butterkase Cheese

Moonachie, NJ (SafetyAlerts) - Schratter Foods has issued a voluntary recall to all levels of distribution for imported Berghaus brand Butterkase Cheese sold in the United States because the product may be contaminated with salmonella.

No illnesses have been reported.

Affected product consists of consumer precut cheese with the following sell by dates: 6/12/01, 6/18/01, 6/26/01, 6/28/01, 7/8/01, 7/16/01, 7/23/01. Sell by dates are stamped on the outer wrapper of each piece of cheese, and Bulk cheese code: "PROD. NO: 120" as indicated on the outer shipping carton label sold to distributors.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in children, the frail and the elderly. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.

Anyone in possession of the affected product is requested to return the product to its place of purchase for a full refund. Questions regarding the product recall may be directed to its United States distributor, Schratter Foods Incorporated, at 201/641-6851.
