Gold Kist Inc. Recalls 114,000 Pounds of Chicken Nuggets and Patties Produced for School Lunch Program

Update: Further Testing by USDA Shows No Listeria Contamination

Atlanta, GA (SafetyAlerts) - Gold Kist Inc. today announced that it was voluntarily notifying warehouses in six states to stop distribution of  nine lots of chicken nuggets and patties produced for the USDA commodity school lunch program.  This action was taken after one sample of the product was tested and showed the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

The nine lots involve approximately 114,000 pounds of product which were processed on January 25, 2000, and shipped to warehouses in Ohio, Texas, Colorado, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

The recalled nuggets and patties were packaged in 20-pound and 40-pound boxes with 10-digit lot codes beginning with 00125 and Est. P-413 appears within the USDA mark of inspection.

A spokesman for Gold Kist, stated that they have received indication that all of the recalled products are on hand in the various facilities and further distribution has been stopped.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause illness in people if proper cooking  procedures are not followed. It is most dangerous to pregnant women, newborns,  persons with weakened immune systems, and the elderly.   Listeria monocytogenes is universally present and can be found in airborne dust particles. It can  easily contaminate food at any point after cooking.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) is testing a duplicate food sample and ambient air samples taken from the warehouses where the food was stored.  The Ohio Department said that if it finds the same strain of the bacterium in the air sample, it would suggest the source of contamination was not the chicken processing plant.

Gold Kist asked the warehouses to hold the products until results are available from its tests and those of the ODA.  The company has informed the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service of its actions.   FSIS is responsible for inspecting products processed at its plants.
