January 10, 2000Mead Johnson Issues Allergy
Alert for Two Flavors of EnfaGrow Nutritional Oatmeal For Toddlers
Evansville, IN (SafetyAlerts) - Mead Johnson
Nutritionals is issuing an allergy alert affecting EnfaGrow Nutritional Oatmeal for
Toddlers in Maple Brown Sugar & Cinnamon and Strawberry flavors because they may
contain trace amounts of milk protein, which is not in the ingredient statements.
Children allergic to milk protein run
the risk of an allergic reaction if they consume these products. This alert pertains only
to these two flavors of EnfaGrow Nutritional Oatmeal for Toddlers. No other EnfaGrow
products are affected.
Mead Johnson became aware of the
labeling omission after further analysis of the products' flavorings revealed trace
amounts of milk protein. While both of these products are perfectly safe for children
without milk protein allergies, the company is issuing this alert to parents in keeping
with its commitment to provide safe and healthy nutrition to children. The company is also
working with retailers to correct the labeling omission.
"While the chances of a child
with a high sensitivity to milk protein consuming this product may be extremely small, we
are unwilling to risk a reaction in even one child who may be hypersensitive to milk
protein," said Dr. J. Roberto Moran, vice president, global medical affairs, Mead
Johnson Nutritionals. "Therefore, we are taking these extra precautions to inform
parents and retailers, and to correct the product labeling."
Parents with questions about the
product and the relabeling can call the Mead Johnson Customer Resource Center at
1-800-222-9123 for more information.
