September 8, 2000Sterile Powder
Used by Hospitals Recalled
MA (SafetyAlerts) - Bryan
Corporation is recalling all lots of its "sterile talc powder" because the
powder may not be sterile.
The product is typically used for lung complications in certain seriously ill patients.
A spokesperson for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would not elaborate other than
to say the company was selling an unapproved product, and testing led to the discovery of
bacteria in some bottles. No illnesses have been reported to date.
FDA said thousands of the bottles were sold to hospitals around the country and in Canada.
Health workers were urged to quit using the powder immediately.
The recalled powder does not sell under a brand name, but Bryan Corp. is listed on the
label. Four grams of the product are sold in a 100-milliliter amber vial, which also lists
catalog number 1690.
Hospitals may contact Bryan Corp. at 1-800-343-7711.
