Ford Motor Company Has Recalled 2002 Ford Truck Ranger

Detroit, MI (SafetyAlerts) -  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has published a recall affecting the 2002 Ford Truck Ranger.

Potential Number of Units Affected: 1096

Manufactured: 05/2001 - 01/2002

Defect Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MANUAL TRANSMISSION TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH THE FX4 PACKAGE. THE REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL CASE COULD FRACTURE UNDER A HIGH TORQUE EVENT SUCH AS WHEN CUSTOMERS ACCELERATE RAPIDLY FROM A STOP OR WHEN A SPINNING TIRE SUDDENLY GAINS TRACTION. DIFFERENTIAL FRACTURES COULD POTENTIALLY RESULT IN WHEEL LOCK-UP.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY. AN OWNER AWARENESS LETTER WILL BE SENT ON OR ABOUT FEBRUARY 11, 2002. THIS LETTER WILL ADVISE OWNERS THAT A DEALER CAN INSPECT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL PRIOR TO PARTS AVAILABILITY IF THE CUSTOMER SO DESIRES. A SECOND LETTER WILL BE SENT DURING APRIL WHEN PARTS ARE AVAILABLE ASKING OWNERS TO RETURN VEHICLES TO DEALERS TO HAVE THE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY REPLACED. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING FEBRUARY/MARCH 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-866-435-7332.
