Ford Motor Company Has Recalled 2002
Ford Truck Ranger
Detroit, MI (SafetyAlerts) -
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has published
a recall affecting the 2002 Ford Truck Ranger.
Potential Number of Units Affected: 1096
Manufactured: 05/2001 - 01/2002
Defect Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MANUAL TRANSMISSION TRUCKS EQUIPPED
WITH THE FX4 PACKAGE. THE REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL CASE COULD FRACTURE UNDER A
HIGH TORQUE EVENT SUCH AS WHEN CUSTOMERS ACCELERATE RAPIDLY FROM A STOP OR
WHEN A SPINNING TIRE SUDDENLY GAINS TRACTION. DIFFERENTIAL FRACTURES COULD
POTENTIALLY RESULT IN WHEEL LOCK-UP.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY. AN OWNER AWARENESS
LETTER WILL BE SENT ON OR ABOUT FEBRUARY 11, 2002. THIS LETTER WILL ADVISE
OWNERS THAT A DEALER CAN INSPECT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL PRIOR TO PARTS
AVAILABILITY IF THE CUSTOMER SO DESIRES. A SECOND LETTER WILL BE SENT DURING
APRIL WHEN PARTS ARE AVAILABLE ASKING OWNERS TO RETURN VEHICLES TO DEALERS
TO HAVE THE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY REPLACED. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO
BEGIN DURING FEBRUARY/MARCH 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN
AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE
REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-866-435-7332.
